Bernini’s Baldachin: A Glorious Restoration in Time for Jubilee Year 2025
Exciting news is coming from the Vatican as the restored gilded bronze canopy towering over the high altar of St Peter’s Basilica is set to be unveiled on 27 October. This momentous occasion follows a major 10-month restoration project costing €700,000, funded by the Order of the Knights of Columbus.
The Baldachin, designed by Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, is a true masterpiece that has stood the test of time for four centuries. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, the construction of this monumental work of art began in 1624 and was completed nine years later.

The 30-metre high, 63-ton Baldacchino was strategically placed directly under the basilica’s dome to mark the sacred site of Saint Peter’s tomb below.
During the creation of the Baldachin, Bernini collaborated with his father Pietro, his brother Luigi, and even his rival Francesco Borromini. The result is a symbol of talent, dedication, and artistic brilliance.
As the restored Baldachin is unveiled, it coincides with the upcoming 2025 Jubilee Year, expected to attract over 30 million pilgrims and tourists to Rome and the Vatican.
