The digital revolution and artificial intelligence bring enormous opportunities but also greater risks that we need to reckon with.
One ancient weapon that has gained strength in this era is fake news. It’s essential to stay vigilant to ensure genuine information.
During a meeting with European Alliance of News Agencies representatives at the Quirinal Palace, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the importance of media freedom and pluralism in upholding fundamental democratic rights such as freedom of expression and information, which are crucial for assessing the quality of democracy. Some may take these rights for granted, while others may hope they lose significance with time.
To underscore his point, Mattarella stood up and shared a ceremonial anecdote, demonstrating respect for the press. He also warned against the recurring temptation of public authorities to impose limits on media freedom instead of safeguarding and supporting these spaces of liberty.
This issue extends beyond Europe to global dimensions and resonates locally, particularly in the context of discussions about the Rai network and a potential reform that could reshape public television. The Ansa organized the Rome meeting of the European Alliance of News Agencies at the Quirinal Palace, with President Giulio Anselmi and CEO Stefano De Alessandri.
Mattarella highlighted a key statement made by Undersecretary for Publishing, Alberto Barachini, emphasizing the constitutional value of press freedom amid contemporary challenges. He reiterated that free, independent, and diverse information is a citizen’s right and a collective duty to demand. This is the antidote to combat manipulative practices.
Mattarella raised concerns about new global players in the information landscape who seek to establish access standards and guidelines, often using digital platforms and artificial intelligence without regard for sector integrity protected by legislation. He also addressed the impact of ongoing conflicts, such as Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine, which rely on hybrid warfare tactics involving fake news to sway public opinion. This places additional responsibility on news agencies to counter propaganda with truth and safeguard public consciousness.
