Luntha TV, a shining beacon of Catholic media in Africa, was founded and is managed by the dedicated Montfort Missionaries in Malawi. Since its inception, it has emerged as one of the leading Catholic television stations on the continent. Father David Niwagaba, the current Director of Luntha TV, recently shared with Vatican News the challenges and triumphs of running a Catholic TV station in Africa.
Officially launched on 5 May 2008 in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, Luntha Television Station broadcasts under the tagline “Bringing Wisdom into Your Home.” The word “Luntha” itself holds meaning in the local Chichewa language, signifying ‘Wisdom.’
Luntha TV Shining Bright on 10 Platforms
Father David Niwagaba, a Ugandan national and Montfort Missionary residing and working in Malawi, has been steering the ship as Director of Luntha TV since 2018. With a background in both priesthood and an MBA degree from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda, Father Niwagaba was called to lead Luntha TV to greater heights.
Reflecting on Luntha TV’s journey, Father Niwagaba emphasized the slow but steady growth of the television station. Today, it reaches over 26 African countries through 10 diverse platforms, including Kiliye Kiliye, Zuku, StarSat, Top Star, Star Times, Gotv, Azam, a mobile App called Kanema Online, YouTube, and Facebook. With a combined reach of over 7.5 million viewers and 6.9 million impressions on Facebook alone, Luntha TV continues to touch lives with its diverse programming.
The television station’s content ranges from spiritual and entertainment shows to informative segments covering current affairs, environmental issues, and developmental programs such as agriculture and health. With five daily news bulletins and one main news broadcast, Luntha TV ensures a comprehensive coverage of Pope’s activities, Church news, local and international affairs, and more.
Challenges Faced and Overcome
Running a Catholic media house in Africa comes with its fair share of challenges, notably financial ones. Father Niwagaba shared the struggles faced by Luntha TV upon his appointment as Director in 2018. Despite numerous obstacles, including limited resources and financial constraints, the unwavering support of the Montfort missionaries, local faithful, donors, and viewers helped Luntha TV stay afloat.
The dedication and resilience of the team, coupled with support from various stakeholders, enabled Luntha TV to not only survive but thrive. Father Niwagaba expressed gratitude for the generosity of supporters from within and outside Malawi, enabling the station to continue its mission of spreading the Good News.
