Welcome to the 1st General Congregation of the Synod of Bishops!
As the Delegate President of the Synod of Bishops, Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, delivered his opening address at the First General Congregation of the second session of the Synod General Assembly, he set the tone for an inspiring and transformative gathering.
Reflecting on the words of Pope Paul VI in his encyclical “Ecclesiam Suam” during the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Retes emphasized the importance of the New Evangelization in today’s context. He highlighted the challenges we face in transmitting the Faith to new generations, especially those affected by social inequality and polarization.
The Cardinal expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for convening the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. He noted the growing importance of synodality as a way to strengthen the bonds within the Church and respond effectively to the challenges of our time.
Through listening to the faithful and engaging in dialogue, Cardinal Retes underscored the need for greater enthusiasm and accuracy in fulfilling pastoral responsibilities. He called for a shift away from traditional models of ecclesial authority towards a more collaborative and inclusive approach.
With a firm belief in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Cardinal Retes encouraged all participants to embrace the journey towards a Missionary Synodal Church. He invoked Pope Benedict XVI’s words in “Spe Salvi,” emphasizing the importance of trustworthy hope in facing life’s challenges.
Looking ahead to the work of the Synod, Cardinal Retes emphasized the value of listening to the People of God and seeking the presence of Jesus in their midst. He called for a renewed trust in God’s promise and a reliance on the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
As we embark on this important gathering, may the Trinity and the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, guide us on this path towards renewal and transformation.
