The Holy See Press Office reported that Pope Francis was taken to the Ottoboni sacristy of St. Peter’s Basilica, where the ancient wooden throne symbolizing the primacy of Peter is temporarily placed. This relic has been moved to make way for the restoration work of Bernini’s Baldacchino, the stunning canopy over the Altar of the Cathedra in St. Peter’s Basilica in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee of Hope.
The restoration work is being carried out by the Fabric of Saint Peter, a Vatican institution led by Mauro Gambetti, responsible for the reconstruction, conservation, maintenance, and use of the basilica. Pope Francis, as the first Pope to witness the Chair of Saint Peter, holds a significant place in this historical moment.
