Welcome to the Laudato Si’ Movement of Nigeria (LSM – Nigeria) blog, where we are passionate about advocating for a just and sustainable future for all. Today, we address the pressing issue of fossil fuel dependency in Nigeria and the urgent need for action.
Recent inaction by the Nigerian Government on this critical issue has prompted the LSM to speak out and call for immediate and concrete action. In a statement signed by National Coordinator Bonny Rex Oboh, the movement urges faith leaders, including the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and other faith-based organizations, to mobilize and demand measures to halt the climate crisis.
The call is clear – stop further expansion of coal, oil, or natural gas infrastructure, phase-out existing fossil fuel production responsibly, and transition to clean energy through peaceful protests. We invite the Knights and Ladies of St. Mulumba and St. John International, alongside the Ladies Auxiliary, to join us in this important advocacy effort.
LSM-Nigeria is also calling on the Government to sign the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and address the environmental and social impact of unchecked fossil fuel use on ecosystems and vulnerable communities. The world cannot afford to ignore the devastating effects of fossil fuels any longer.
At COP 28, over 120 countries called for a transition away from fossil fuels, yet meaningful action remains lacking. We express disappointment in the lack of leadership from political, religious, and traditional authorities, and urge all people of faith to raise their voices in demanding change.
Laudato Si’, an Encyclical of Pope Francis, underscores the importance of caring for our common home – the earth. It prompts us to consider the broader implications of climate change and challenges us to rethink our socio-economic systems. Let us stand together in solidarity for a sustainable future!
