Welcome to the journey towards a better world and a more universal Church that resonates with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In 2021, Pope Francis called for a Synod on Synodality within the Catholic Church, set to conclude in October 2024. The essence of a Synod, derived from Greek roots, signifies “journeying together.” This assembly gathers bishops convened by the Pope to address current social and ecclesial issues, seeking pastoral solutions applicable at the local diocesan and universal Church levels.
Pope Francis emphasizes SYNODALITY as the theme for this synod, encapsulating the motto “FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH: COMMUNION, PARTICIPATION AND MISSION.” These principles outline the Church envisioned by Pope Francis: a community united in love, diverse in gifts, and committed to active evangelization.
- COMMUNION fosters unity and peace through recognizing each individual as a child of God, in alignment with Christ’s prayer for unity (Jn 17:21).
- PARTICIPATION values the equality and diversity of all believers in building a loving family of God.
- MISSION calls for active discipleship, bringing the light of the Gospel to a world in need.
The Synod on Synodality is a four-year journey with phases like opening celebrations, consultations, discernment, and implementation. This process stimulates renewal within the Catholic Church globally.
Looking ahead to the outcomes of this Synod, we anticipate key traits shaping the future of the Catholic Church:
- Rooted in the joy of salvation, believers embody the transformative life of Christ.
- Living the Gospel as a way of life, individuals become agents of change in the world.
As we navigate the challenges of our time, may the Church evolve into a beacon of mercy, humility, and unity, reflecting the compassionate service exemplified by Christ. Let us embody a Church that serves all, transcending boundaries and embracing the diversity of God’s creation.
- Embracing a sense of belonging and unity, we carry out our mission of love together.
- Guided by the Holy Spirit, we find courage and hope amidst trials, trusting in God’s providence.
Ultimately, the call for a Synodal Church beckons us to translate our ideals into tangible actions, shaping our daily lives as disciples of Christ. Let us embody the values of communion, participation, and mission in all aspects of our journey.
