The Enchanting Ottobrate Romane Tradition
Experience the magic of Ottobrate Romane, a traditional Roman countryside day trip that traces its roots back to the grape harvest season and the joyous festivities that followed.
Back in the day, Romans would embark on horse-drawn carts, making their way to vineyards outside the city walls for a day of sun, wine, and celebration. The highlight of these trips included indulging in lavish feasts featuring Roman delicacies like gnocchi, abbacchio (lamb), and tripe.
This ancient tradition, known as the Ottobrate Romane, was characterized by the liberal consumption of wine, evoking memories of the Bacchanalia feasts of old. Music, dance, and games added to the merriment, creating an atmosphere of joy and revelry that lasted well into the night.
Popular destinations for these excursions included Monte dei Cocci in Testaccio and vineyards near iconic Roman gates like Porta Pia, Porta S. Pancrazio, Porta S. Giovanni, and Ponte Milvio.
