Welcome to the Inauguration of the Pax Christi Catholic Institute for Nonviolence!
Cardinals Robert McElroy and Charles Bo recently inaugurated the new Pax Christi Catholic Institute for Nonviolence in Rome, in the presence of Pope Francis who sent his support and called for charity and nonviolence to guide the world.
Cardinal Bo and Cardinal McElroy, along with other esteemed speakers, came together to mark the launch of the Institute, which aims to promote nonviolence as a central teaching of the Catholic Church. This initiative by Pax Christi International, a global movement dedicated to peace, will provide research, resources, and experiences in nonviolence for Church leaders and global institutions.
During the event, held at the “Istituto Maria Santissima Bambina” in Rome, discussions centered around the importance of active non-violence in the face of conflict and violence that plagues our world today.
Embracing Nonviolence as a Path to Peace
In an interview prior to the event, Cardinal McElroy emphasized the significance of promoting nonviolence in challenging times. He highlighted the message of peace and love outlined in Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli Tutti as a guiding light for addressing global conflicts.
Cardinal McElroy underlined that nonviolence, while not a comprehensive solution to all problems, forms the core of the Church’s mission. Pope Francis reiterated the importance of charity and nonviolence in guiding our interactions with each other and building a society founded on mutual love.
Peaceful Coexistence and Nonviolence
Cardinal Bo drew parallels between the teachings of Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King as advocates of peace and nonviolence. With a focus on Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” Cardinal Bo stressed the enduring strength of love over hate and the unshakeable foundation of nonviolent justice.
The creation of the Institute will serve as a platform to reclaim Jesus’ message of nonviolence, incorporating theological reflections, practical strategies, and experiences from marginalized communities committed to peace.
Building a Future Rooted in Nonviolence
The Institute’s activities will include seminars led by theologians, researchers, and practitioners of nonviolence. The Advisory council features esteemed members who will contribute to discussions on Gospel nonviolence, nonviolent practices, and strategic power.
As we navigate through conflicts and strive for a peaceful existence, the Institute aims to inspire individuals to dream of a world where nonviolence is not just a concept but a reality. By coming together to explore the power of nonviolence, we take a step towards building a future founded on love and compassion.
