The excitement is palpable as Pope Francis arrives in Belgium for a brief but impactful visit. During his time here, he will meet with key figures such as the King, Prime Minister, local clergy, and students and faculty at the esteemed Leuven and Louvain Catholic universities.
Walter Ceyssens, SJ, a dedicated Jesuit priest residing in Leuven, is deeply involved with the university’s student community. In a candid conversation with Vatican News, he shared his hopes and expectations for the Pope’s visit.
Facing Challenges and Embracing Change
As the Pope’s visit looms, Fr. Ceyssens reflects on Belgium’s troubled past, marred by a series of child sexual abuse scandals that have shaken the Church’s credibility. “We have faced challenges,” he emphasized, “and it is crucial that we confront them head-on.”
Seeing the visit as an opportunity for healing and growth, Fr. Ceyssens expressed optimism about the Church’s ability to learn from past mistakes and embrace accountability. “As a member of the Church,” he remarked, “I find this visit truly inspiring. It rejuvenates my faith in the Church’s role in society.”
Hope in Action
One initiative driving optimism within the Belgian Church is Hope Happening, a youth event organized in connection with the papal journey. Fr. Ceyssens is actively involved in coordinating this event, which will take place at the Brussels Expo on September 28th, just a stone’s throw away from the King Baudouin Stadium where Pope Francis will lead Mass the following day for a crowd of 35,000 faithful.
“The event will feature a morning walk, a ‘City of Hope’ showcasing Catholic movements and organizations, and uplifting music,” shared Fr. Ceyssens. Participants will then gather at the stadium for Mass with the Pope, uniting in hope and faith.
Celebrating Faith and Scholarship
Fr. Ceyssens also highlighted the significance of the Pope’s visit to the Catholic University of Leuven, emphasizing the Church’s vital role in intellectual discourse. “The Church’s intellectual tradition is rich,” he affirmed, “faith serves as a foundation for research and contemplation, offering a positive message that the Pope embodies.”
