I am thrilled to extend my gratitude to President Biden for coordinating this crucial meeting as part of the Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats. Italy stands firmly against the use of drugs and is dedicated to fulfilling our commitments within international forums, including the G7. We firmly believe that there is no excuse for drug use, and it is our collective responsibility to take action before these substances cause irreversible harm. It is imperative for us to send clear messages that drugs devastate lives, all substances are harmful, and those who claim otherwise are misleading the public. Our institutions must actively combat drug production and trafficking, prioritize prevention efforts, and support individuals undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.
The Italian Government has intensified its efforts to combat synthetic drugs by implementing a specialized National Prevention Plan against the misuse of fentanyl and other opioids. Our comprehensive approach encompasses informing the vulnerable populations, securing antidotes, strengthening controls to prevent drug entry into our territory, monitoring online activities, and taking swift action in case of overdoses. Prevention remains our primary focus, alongside the importance of collaboration. By networking and sharing information, we can better safeguard the lives of our citizens. Italy takes pride in being among the pioneering European nations in this endeavor.
We are pleased that our commitment aligns with the G7’s vision. Through a joint declaration, we have pledged to enhance international efforts to combat drug trafficking, confiscate illicit drug proceeds, and curb addiction, especially among the youth. We have urged all nations impacted by drug threats to crackdown on suppliers of precursor chemicals for synthetic drugs. Our multi-dimensional commitment is underscored by longstanding practices, such as the National Early Warning System for Drugs, established in 2009 to identify emerging drug threats promptly and alert relevant health authorities. Additionally, Italy’s expertise in combating drug trafficking, shared through strategic partnerships with various nations, exemplifies effective collaboration.
Prevention and collaboration are our key strategies, both domestically and internationally.
I wholeheartedly endorse President Biden’s proposal and affirm Italy’s readiness to collaborate on a Joint Action Plan focusing on early warning systems for synthetic drugs, including fentanyl.
We are eager to commence our collaborative efforts as the task at hand is significant. Professionals working in addiction prevention and rehabilitation emphasize that treating individuals is a victory in itself, underscoring the importance of our collective endeavors.
