Welcome to the Annual Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops!
Greetings to all as we gather for the annual assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in the historic Archdiocese of Quebec, celebrating its 350th anniversary. This year’s assembly promises insightful discussions and decisions that will shape the priorities of the Church in Canada for the coming year.
Among the key topics on the agenda are the Synod on Synodality, the Jubilee Year 2025, family and life, euthanasia and palliative care, evangelization and catechesis, as well as dialogue and solidarity with Indigenous peoples.
Eighty bishops from across Canada are actively participating in the assembly, receiving reports and presentations from various episcopal commissions. The valuable insights shared will guide the bishops in making informed decisions and setting priorities to steer the Church in the right direction.
A Message from the President
In his address to the Plenary Assembly, Bishop William McGrattan of Calgary, the President of the CCCB, emphasized the formation of a working group to address issues concerning euthanasia and palliative care. The group’s goal is to establish a robust advocacy network and create a strategic framework to enhance access to palliative care. He also highlighted the Conference’s commitment to promoting human life at all stages.
In response to Pope Francis’ call for justice, healing, and reconciliation, the CCCB has taken significant steps in supporting the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund through statements and structures aimed at fostering dialogue and building relationships with Indigenous communities.
Bishop McGrattan also shared insights on synodal initiatives, including discussions on the practice of synodality in local churches. He announced the appointment of Bishop Alain Faubert to represent the Church in Canada at the upcoming General Assembly of the Synod in October.
Looking towards the Jubilee Year 2025, Bishop McGrattan spoke of the close collaboration with the universal Church in planning celebrations that will take place both in Rome and at national shrines under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope.”
The Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops is set to take place from 23-27 September in Beaupré, Quebec. Stay tuned for more updates and insights from this enriching gathering!
