Today, I welcomed the team of designated commissioners to the Berlaymont. Getting to know each other is the foundation of good cooperation. I was pleased to see that they are all very motivated and focused on the upcoming hearings at the European Parliament, and I believe we will form a great team for Europe,” wrote the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the end of the just-concluded meeting with the 26 designated commissioners for the next EU Commission.
A ‘catwalk’ of designated commissioners at the Berlaymont Palace to meet the president. The socialist Teresa Ribera and the liberal Stéphane Séjourné, both executive vice presidents, entered together, chatting with each other. “Questions? Later…”, said the Frenchman.
Among the other vice presidents, there was silence from the current minister Raffaele Fitto, the Finn Henna Virkkunen, and the Estonian Kaja Kallas, the new EU High Representative. “Happy with my portfolio? More than happy,” said the Romanian Roxana Mînzatu. Among the commissioners, the most enthusiastic were the 35-year-old Maltese Glenn Micallef – “I’m thrilled” – and the Lithuanian Andrius Kubilius, assigned to Defense. “I survive,” joked with the press as he entered the Commission. And to the quip “security in Europe is now in the hands of the Baltics,” he replied, “Absolutely.”

This is a first presentation meeting between the new executive vice presidents and designated European commissioners, as well as with the executive head. Everyone was present, apparently, except the Slovenian Marta Kos and the Austrian Magnus Brunner, who were engaged in their respective Parliaments.
Following the announcement of the new team, there is still some uncertainty about the organizational chart and hierarchy among the vice presidents and commissioners. Even the European Parliament – as we understand it – is awaiting clarification from von der Leyen.
The new members of the College will be assigned a temporary office in the building opposite the Berlaymont Palace – the main seat of the Commission – and from today onwards, they will begin to receive the official documents of their respective dossiers to prepare for the hearings with Members of the European Parliament.

“Yes, certainly.” This is how the designated executive vice president of the EU Commission, responsible for the Green Deal and antitrust, Teresa Ribera, responded to ANSA about her willingness to advance the European green agenda in the next legislature. Leaving the Berlaymont Palace, the Spaniard described the reception organized by the president with her new team of commissioners as “positive.”
