Get ready for a time of prayer and reflection as the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops approaches in Rome from October 2 to 27. Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the General Secretariat of the Synod, emphasized that the main focus of the Synod is the Holy Spirit, setting the tone for a transformative and spiritually enriching experience.

What’s New?
This year’s Synod will kick off with a two-day spiritual retreat on September 30 and October 1, followed by a penitential vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica on October 1, led by Pope Francis. The Synod aims to engage the youth in its message, acknowledging their suffering due to societal sins and challenges.
Participants will have the opportunity to confess sins related to peace, creation, migrants, and more. The Synod will culminate in a powerful penitential act, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation for all.
Joining in Prayer
Don’t miss the ecumenical prayer service at Protomartyrs Square on October 11, commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. The Synod will also feature a day of spiritual retreat on October 21, fostering a space for personal reflection, dialogue, and communion.
Engage and Learn
For the first time, the Synod will hold four theological-pastoral fora open to all attendees and accredited journalists. These sessions will delve into subjects like the role of bishops in a synodal church and the relationship between local and universal Church. Online access will also be available to encourage wider participation.
Numerical Insights
Cardinal Hollerich revealed that the Synod will host 368 participants, including bishops, non-bishops, special invitees, and fraternal delegates, with the noteworthy inclusion of bishops from China. The Synod is set to be an inclusive and impactful event for all involved.
