A few weeks before the highly anticipated visit of Pope Francis, the Archdiocesan Commission for Catholic Schools in Singapore organized an art and video competition with a focus on the theme of the Papal Journey. Students were encouraged to create artwork expressing their vision of unity and hope for the Church, as well as write a prayer for the pontiff.
In a report by Catholic News SG, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Singapore, the three winners of the competition shared their inspirations and thoughts.
Chao Chia Ling, a student from Canossa Catholic Primary School, drew inspiration for her artwork from a visit to the Church of the Holy Spirit during a combined choir rehearsal. She was captivated by the beauty of the church, particularly the stained glass depicting a dove, symbolizing hope for her.
Chao Chia Ling explained, “I want hope for everyone in the world. I drew two elderly people because I believe the elderly are wiser than us. They are shown reading the Bible and praying together in peace.” She expressed her deep gratitude for Pope Francis’s visit to Singapore, emphasizing that it holds great meaning for her, and she hopes that the pontiff will continue to inspire belief in God.
Another winner, Eunice Lai from Canossa Catholic Primary School, used software to create an illustration of Pope Francis standing in front of Saint Theresa’s Home, surrounded by smiling individuals. She chose St. Theresa’s Home as the focal point of her artwork because it is one of the places the Pope would be visiting during his time in Singapore.
In her drawing, she depicted people holding hands to emphasize the importance of unity despite differences. Eunice stated, “Through my drawing, I want to convey to the world that embracing each other will lead to stronger hope and unity.”
Representing the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Kellock), Caylin O’Driscoll, another competition winner, illustrated Pope Francis standing on a globe, reflecting his global travels to meet people. In her artwork, Caylin is seen doing a toe touch to welcome the Pope while her friends cheer and wave as he arrives at Changi Airport. The sun in her painting symbolizes a hope for good weather during the Pope’s visit, and the rainbow represents hope and happiness.
This heartwarming display of creativity and faith from the students in Singapore showcases their excitement and anticipation for the upcoming visit of Pope Francis, as well as their desire for unity and hope within the Church.
