The festival, under the artistic direction of Fabrizio Grifasi, aims to dive into the complexities of the present while pushing the boundaries of imagination to explore human emotions and movements both today and into the future. It’s crafted as an “open space” for dialogue between generations and artistic practices, nurturing a spirit of sharing, celebration, discovery, and awe.

The festival kicks off with mesmerizing international dance performances, including “Mycelium” by Christos Papadopoulos for the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, and the revival of Merce Cunningham’s “Biped” at Teatro Costanzi. The opening week also pays homage to Ryuichi Sakamoto with a live show by the Brussels Philharmonic at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and a film screening at MAXXI.
Explore the Vibrant International Scene

The fusion of dance and music, alongside diverse languages and aesthetics, enriches the international lineup of REF2024. This year’s festival bridges Europe and the world, uniting various narratives and perspectives.
Returning to the limelight at Teatro Argentina is the Franco-Catalan ensemble Baro d’evel with “Qui Som?,” a delightful medley of musicians, dancers, acrobats, ceramicists, and artists from multiple disciplines. The synergy between dance and music continues with Flemish choreographer Jan Martens’ “Voice Noise,” dedicated to the female voice, and French choreographer Noé Soulier, blending choreography with J.S. Bach’s music in “Close Up.”
Prepare to be transported to Central America by the Mexican company Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, delving into the nation’s relationship with the people of Central America, starting with the compelling tale of a Nicaraguan woman forced to flee her homeland.
In “House,” director Amos Gitai brings together actors and musicians from the Middle East on the stage of Teatro Argentina, fostering a dialogue between languages, origins, and musical traditions. The performance mirrors the lives of the occupants of a house in Jerusalem over a quarter century.
Experience the Magic of Music

On Sunday, October 20, Teatro Argentina presents “Nuvolario,” featuring Steve Reich’s masterpiece “Music for 18 Musicians,” weaving a musical tapestry where ephemeral elements like clouds and breath take center stage. Flemish-Ghanaian director Gorges Ocloo presents the musical theater piece “The Golden Stool,” bringing to life a personal “AfrOpera” inspired by the resistance struggles of Nana Yaa Asentewaa.
The REF’s musical offerings also include a blend of literature, poetry, and music in “Bello Mondo” by Mariangela Gualtieri, Uri Caine, and Paolo Fresu, as well as in “L’ultimo viaggio di Sindbad” by Italian composer Silvia Colasanti, a performance at Teatro Nazionale inspired by Erri de Luca’s text.
The eclectic mix of music at REF features major concerts, technological explorations, and experimental creation formats. Einstürzende Neubauten kicks off their Italian tour of the latest album “Alien Pop Music” at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, while Trentemøller showcases his latest musical projects live. In “Inner Spaces,” trumpeter, santur player, and vocalist Amir ElSaffar collaborates with electronic artist Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesh.
