As Pope Francis wrapped up his three-day visit to Timor-Leste, he met with the youth of the nation and shared inspiring words of wisdom. The Pontiff urged the young people to take responsibility and become the driving force for the future of their country.

During his address in Dili, Pope Francis offered a simple yet profound message to the young audience: “I have two words of advice for you: make a mess and respect your elders!”
The meeting took place at the Congress Centre, marking the final public event of the Holy Father’s Apostolic Journey to Timor-Leste. In his speech, Pope Francis commended the young population, who represent a clear majority in the nation of 1.4 million, with over 95% being Catholic.
He shared how deeply moved he was by the smiles he witnessed on the faces of the Timorese people during his visit.
Encouraging the youth to honor the sacrifices of their forefathers in building the nation, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of respecting the elderly. He highlighted the dual treasures in society – the young and the elderly – and stressed the need for mutual care and respect.
In his address, the Pope touched upon the values of freedom, commitment, and fraternity. He spoke about the concept of “ukun rasik-an,” meaning “everyone is able to govern themselves” in the Tetum language.
Pope Francis underlined the true essence of freedom, stating that it involves not just doing as one pleases, but also showing respect towards others and the environment. He also highlighted the significance of fraternity and the power of reconciliation in building a harmonious society.
Addressing the youth’s rich history of heroism, faith, and reconciliation, the Pope reminded them of the exemplary life of Jesus, emphasizing forgiveness and reconciliation as essential virtues.
