Rome’s Casa del Cinema, located in Villa Borghese, named after Mastroianni, is currently featuring a retrospective dedicated to the actor throughout September and October.

Mastroianni, born in Fontana Liri, about 90 km southeast of Rome on 28 September 1924, showcased his versatility and talent across various genres, from comedy to drama, appearing in a total of 147 films, starting as an extra in 1939 at the age of 14.
Through the 1940s, he built a reputation for his work in theatre and film, gradually gaining acclaim, leading to breakthrough roles in films like Atto d’accusa (1950), Le notti bianche (1957) by Luchino Visconti, and I soliti ignoti (1958) by Mario Monicelli.

He achieved international acclaim in the 1960s for his collaborations with Federico Fellini, notably in La Dolce Vita (1960) and 8½ (1963), and formed a memorable on-screen partnership with Sophia Loren, co-starring in several films.

Recognized for his charm and charisma, Mastroianni received three Oscar nominations for Best Actor and won various awards at international film festivals. He continued working in films until his passing in 1996.
