Unity in Diversity: Christians Celebrate Feast of the Cross in Erbil
In the vibrant suburb of Ankawa in Erbil, northern Iraq, a historic and heartwarming celebration is taking place. Catholic, Orthodox, and Assyrian Christians are coming together to prepare for the Feast of the Cross, which commenced on September 9th and will culminate on September 14th. This unity in diversity reflects a newfound sense of hope and togetherness among the various Christian communities, as they rebuild their lives following a tumultuous period of violence in Iraq.

The festivities, marked by prayers, cultural meetings, and colorful decorations adorning the streets, are a testament to the shared faith that binds these Christians together. Each day, they gather in different churches, praying for peace and solidarity as they prepare for the upcoming liturgical Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This significant celebration holds a special place in the hearts of all Christians, regardless of their denomination.

During the opening ceremony on September 9th, a grand procession led a large cross to the Assyrian Church of the East of St. John the Baptist. The solemnity of the occasion was enhanced by hymns sung by clergy and faithful, holding candles as symbols of praise, adoration, and unity. Monsignor Bashar Matti Warda, the arch-parish priest of the Chaldean Catholic Diocese of Erbil, emphasized the significance of this joint celebration, which was organized with the cooperation of various church leaders.

In his address, Patriarch Mar Awa III highlighted the spiritual importance of commemorating the finding of the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ. This celebration serves as a powerful reminder of Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection, instilling hope for eternal life and the Second Coming of Christ.

These celebrations not only signify a deeper sense of unity among Christians but also hold promise for the future of Iraqi Christian communities. Despite facing challenges such as wars and political instability, the resilient spirit of these Christians shines through in events like the Ankawa festival. As Pope Francis once stated, “commitment to ecumenism responds to the prayer of the Lord Jesus that ‘they may all be one,'” emphasizing the importance of unity among believers.
While the number of Christians in Iraq may have dwindled over the years, the spirit of hope and faith remains unwavering. The Feast of the Holy Cross in Erbil serves as a beacon of light, guiding these communities towards a brighter future as they stand together in faith, solidarity, and love.
