Welcome to the annual celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday, a heartwarming event that took place at St Leo’s Parish in Lagos this year. Despite the challenging economic times in Nigeria, over five thousand children and adults were generously fed, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the parish community.
One of the highlights of the event was the presence of Nigeria’s Metropolitan Archbishop emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, along with several priests, religious, and parishioners. The feast, which began as a Covid-19 initiative, has grown in both scale and significance over the years.
The local organizing committee diligently raises funds in advance to ensure that everyone in attendance can enjoy a delicious meal on 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The event draws the support of kind-hearted benefactors, including senior citizens who willingly contribute to feed those in need.
Addressing the crowd, Cardinal Onaiyekan emphasized the importance of honoring Mother Mary, acknowledging her continuous role as a caring mother, intercessor, and teacher. Monsignor John Aniagwu, the parish priest, lauded the initiative to feed thousands of individuals in the midst of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
As the celebration came to a close, hymns and prayers were dedicated to Mother Mary, expressing gratitude for her unwavering maternal care and protection. Despite Nigeria’s social and economic struggles, the spirit of sharing and community prevailed at St Leo’s Parish, underscoring the enduring importance of compassion and generosity.
