As the sun rose on Pope Francis’ second full day in Papua New Guinea, over 20,000 local Catholics gathered at Sir John Guise Stadium, some arriving as early as 2 AM, eager to participate in Sunday Mass with the Holy Father.
Many had journeyed for days from remote areas of the country to reach Port Moresby in time for this special occasion.
Their excitement was palpable as Pope Francis arrived, and they welcomed him with songs and traditional dances.
In his homily, the Pope reflected on the Gospel passage from Mark where Jesus healed a deaf man with a speech impediment. He reminded the faithful that no matter how distant they may feel from God, they are always at the center of His heart.
Pope Francis emphasized the importance of opening oneself to God, to fellow brothers and sisters, and to the Gospel, making it the guiding compass of their lives.
He cautioned against the negative influence of evil and witchcraft, stating that they only serve to imprison individuals in falsehoods and fear.
Later in the day, the Pope flew to the coastal city of Vanimo in the northwestern part of the country, where he spent time with local Catholics, listening to their stories and expressing gratitude for the missionary efforts in the region.
He encouraged the entire community to embrace their missionary calling, spreading love and unity to overcome personal, familial, and tribal conflicts, dispelling fear and harmful practices.
During a visit to the village of Baro, Pope Francis met with Argentinian missionaries and religious sisters, brought together by the invitation of an old friend, Father Martin Prado.
Overjoyed by the Pope’s presence, the missionaries referred to him as “a man of great heart,” showcasing his genuine connection with people.
After this heartwarming reunion, Pope Francis returned to Port Moresby to rest before his final day in Papua New Guinea, where he would engage with young people to conclude his Apostolic Journey.
The next stop on his journey abroad would take him to Timor-Leste, marking the third stage of his 45th Apostolic Journey.
