As Papua New Guinea prepares for Pope Francis’ arrival, Radio Maria Papua New Guinea, a broadcasting partner of Vatican News, is gearing up for comprehensive media coverage. Father Joseph Emmanuvel Amith, a Vincentian missionary serving as the station director, hopes to provide both local and remote coverage to reach the nation’s population spread across various territories and islands, encompassing over eight million people speaking more than 830 different languages.
Father Amith and his team are stationed at the multimedia broadcasting center to air all events with field personnel providing live coverage and interviews. Despite their limited resources, they aim to engage listeners to participate in the events, especially those in remote areas where communication is challenging. With about 90% of the population tuning in to the radio, it serves as a vital communication tool fostering community building in a nation where television and internet reach are restricted to urban centers and few islands.
Speaking to Delphine Allaire of Vatican News ahead of the Pope’s visit, Father Amith expressed optimism about the visit’s potential to bring unity to a diverse nation like Papua New Guinea. He believes that the Pope’s presence as “an elderly man” radiating grace and delivering messages of faith, mutual respect, harmony, solidarity, and peace will touch hearts and pave the way for peace in the nation.
Inspiring and informative, Radio Maria Papua New Guinea primarily broadcasts in English with programs focusing on Christian faith, devotions, Marian spirituality, and educational content. The programming emphasizes information on healthcare and social issues, providing valuable insights to enhance living conditions and foster community development. Guest speakers including experts, university professors, and medical professionals contribute their knowledge to engage both Catholic and non-Catholic listeners, aiming to build a universal audience and promote education for the betterment of the people, as stated by Father Amith.
