Welcome Alessandro Giuli: Italy’s New Culture Minister
Italy is gearing up to host the G7 culture summit, and with that comes a change in leadership. Alessandro Giuli has stepped into the role of Italy’s new culture minister, replacing Gennaro Sangiuliano who resigned amidst scandal. Giuli was sworn in by President Sergio Mattarella in a ceremony at the Quirinal Palace in Rome.
Prior to his appointment, Giuli served as the president of MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome. His ties to premier Giorgia Meloni and the right-wing coalition have positioned him as a Meloni loyalist, making him a strong contender for the culture portfolio from the outset.
In the past, Giuli has been embroiled in controversies, such as the fallout from former culture undersecretary Vittorio Sgarbi’s sexist rant at MAXXI. Despite this, Giuli’s background as a journalist and writer, along with his appearances on political and current affairs shows, make him a familiar figure on Rome’s cultural scene.
His upcoming tasks as culture minister will include overseeing the G7 culture summit in Campania, where he will meet with counterparts from other G7 nations. Giuli’s background in philosophy, journalism, and his experience in the cultural sector make him an intriguing addition to the Italian political landscape.
Giuli’s personal life adds another dimension to his public persona. Born in Rome, he studied philosophy at La Sapienza and is married to SkyTg24 journalist Valeria Falcioni. Together, they have two children.
As Italy prepares for this prestigious cultural summit, all eyes will be on Alessandro Giuli as he takes the helm as the country’s culture minister.
