The city of Port Moresby is buzzing with excitement as preparations are underway for Pope Francis’ visit. Catholics from all corners of the country are converging on this vibrant city. From the mountainous Highlands to the Islands, Momase, and Southern regions, people are coming together to welcome the Holy Father.
At the Sir John Guise Stadium, where the Pope will lead Holy Mass and engage with young people, the atmosphere is lively with colorful clothing, traditional chants, and songs representing the rich cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea.
Leading the preparations is Sister Daisy Lisania, MSC, who is filled with emotion at the prospect of the Pope’s visit. She shares, “For me as a woman religious, it means a lot. This Pope has a heart for Papua New Guinea, and his decision to visit despite his age and physical challenges is truly touching.”
As the city gears up for the long-awaited visit, the challenges faced by many in Port Moresby are not forgotten. Yet, the joy of welcoming such an esteemed guest as the Bishop of Rome outweighs the hardships. For many like John Junior Dinz, this visit holds a special significance. His parents’ experience of seeing Saint John Paul II in 1984 inspired him to make the journey to meet Pope Francis.
With the last papal visit to Papua New Guinea nearly three decades ago, the faithful are eager to welcome Pope Francis with open arms and hearts, embracing him as their leader and shepherd.
