Global sustainability leaders and key figures from across the private and public sectors recently convened in the picturesque city of Pisa for the Terra Tuscany summit. This three-day event, held on September 2-4, aimed to advance discussions on climate action and ecological transformation in alignment with the teachings of Pope Francis.
The summit, titled “Terra Tuscany: A Climate Action Summit for Global Sustainability Leaders,” was organized by Illuminem, a renowned sustainability data platform. Andrea Gori, the founder of Illuminem, emphasized the importance of educating about sustainability as a mission and not just a job. He highlighted the significance of bringing together global leaders in Tuscany to promote a world where Pope Francis serves as a moral and spiritual guide, advocating for an accessible and deeply human approach to ecology.
Key figures such as Roberta Boscolo from the World Meteorological Organization and Prof. Emilce Cuda from the Pontifical Commission for Latin America were featured at the event. Boscolo stressed the critical role of organizations like WMO in advancing global climate science and supporting nations in combating climate change through collaboration and innovation. She also underlined the importance of Pope Francis’ leadership in advocating for a united global response to the climate crisis.
Emilce Cuda discussed the importance of personal transformation in addressing sustainability challenges, echoing Pope Francis’ message of prioritizing happiness over profitability. She also highlighted the upcoming COP16 in Cali and the Pope’s call for global leaders to engage in sustainable initiatives.
Marvin Rottenberg, the director of Terras and former Google executive, created Terra Tuscany to address critical sustainability issues through intimate, in-person interactions. He emphasized the value of fostering lasting connections among world leaders to drive positive climate action.
Unlike traditional conferences, Terra Tuscany aimed to provide a platform for personal connections and valuable insights in a beautiful and inspiring setting. The event hosted 80 participants and focused on key topics such as biodiversity credits, sustainable leadership, and industry practices for digital and ecological transformation.
