Egyptian Sources: ‘No More Tunnels under Philadelphia’
Egyptian security sources at the Rafah border crossing and an “official” from northern Sinai have refuted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims that the Egyptian border with Gaza is used for smuggling weapons to Hamas terrorists. These sources, speaking to ANSA, stated that the tunnels were completely eliminated in 2015 and that there have been no underground passages in the Filadelfia corridor between Rafah and the Mediterranean coast in the last nine years.
From this “number one international reference point” to the intersection of the Egyptian-Palestinian-Israeli border (“point 7”), there are Egyptian guards and a control tower every half kilometer. The area is heavily patrolled and devoid of any population, agriculture, or housing according to the sources, making it impossible to dig tunnels. Additionally, a “large fish company” has been established on the border to hinder the construction of underground passages. It would also be challenging for weapons to reach the border zone.
