Welcome to a New Era of Taxis in Rome!
Rome took a step towards a brighter future by issuing a public tender online for 1,000 new taxi licenses, the first such issuance in 20 years. This decision comes as a breath of fresh air for residents and tourists alike, as the city has long grappled with a shortage of cabs.
These licenses will consist of 800 regular licenses and 200 specifically designated for vehicles catering to people with disabilities, as confirmed by the city’s mobility transport representative, Eugenio Patanè.
The timing of this move is crucial, especially with the anticipated surge in visitors during the Jubilee Year 2025. As Rome gears up to welcome millions of tourists and pilgrims, the availability of taxis becomes paramount.
Despite facing opposition from the taxi lobby, Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri hailed this as a “historic day.” Applications for the new licenses will remain open until 23 September, followed by examinations, with the goal of issuing the licenses starting from December.
In recent years, the scarcity of taxis has posed challenges for both tourists and locals in Rome, often leading to negative perceptions of the sector.
New Fare Structure
Additionally, the tender for taxi licenses coincides with revised fare rates, including an initial fixed charge of €3.50 on weekdays during the day and €7.50 at night. There is also a new minimum fare of €9, along with fixed rates for trips to Fiumicino and Ciampino airports set at €55 and €40 respectively, for journeys within the city’s Aurelian Walls.
