Young people hold the future in their hands, and Pope Francis believes they can be powerful instruments of peace in a world plagued by conflicts and violence. In a heartfelt message to 500 youths from the Italian Diocese of Amalfi-Cava de’ Tirreni, the Pope urged them not to resign to the devastating effects of war but to actively promote peace in their communities and beyond.

“Never resign to the idea that war can solve problems and lead to peace,” Pope Francis emphasized. He referred to war as a shameful surrender to evil forces that only result in death and destruction. The Pope’s message comes at a crucial time when global conflicts continue to cause widespread suffering and loss.
Without peace, there is no life
The event, titled “On the way to Peace with the Blessed Gerardo Sasso di Scala,” honors the legacy of Blessed Gerardo Sasso, who founded the Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem in the face of conflict. Pope Francis commended the organizers for choosing a theme that resonates with the current state of the world.
Fill your day with acts of peace
The Pope outlined three essential ways to become instruments of peace. He encouraged the youths to engage in acts of kindness, service, and forgiveness throughout their day. Drawing inspiration from Blessed Gerardo Sasso, who built bridges of friendship during a time of conflict, the young people were urged to follow his example.
“Following his example,” the Pope said, “you too can build bridges of friendship and mutual solidarity.”
Prayer is a powerful weapon
Pope Francis highlighted the power of prayer in promoting peace. He urged the youths to pray fervently for peace, reminding them that nothing is impossible for God. The Pope emphasized the importance of personal prayer and collective moments of Eucharistic adoration as means to invoke peace in a troubled world.
Be pilgrims of hope
Lastly, Pope Francis encouraged the young people to be pilgrims of hope, dreaming of a peaceful and united future. Rejecting the notion that war can lead to peace, the Pope urged the youths to work towards reconciliation and a harmonious society. He reminded them of the importance of unity and happiness among God’s children.
Pope Francis concluded his message by entrusting the youths to Mary, Queen of Peace, urging them to continue their journey as ambassadors of hope and peace in a world longing for unity and love.
