Set to embark on his Apostolic Journey on September 2 to 13, Pope Francis’ upcoming visit is expected to provide a significant boost to the ongoing evangelization efforts in the young mission territory of Vanimo. Father Miguel highlighted the arrival of the Gospel in Vanimo just 50 years ago, creating a vibrant and enthusiastic Church eager to receive the Pope.
People are coming from far and wide, some even walking for days due to transportation challenges, to witness the historic visit. Father Miguel described the preparations and excitement among the people of Papua New Guinea, who eagerly await the Pope’s arrival on September 8, coinciding with the Nativity of the Blessed Mother.
The Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE), to which Father Miguel belongs, has been present in Papua New Guinea since 1997. They have been actively involved in evangelization efforts, including translating the Gospels into local dialects and working on advancing the canonization cause of Peter ToRot, Papua’s first native blessed.
Situated in a challenging environment with various ethnic groups and hundreds of dialects, Papua New Guinea faces numerous obstacles in spreading the Gospel. Father Miguel highlighted the difficulties faced by missionaries in providing basic necessities like healthcare and education for the local communities.
A key aspect of the IVE’s evangelization efforts in Vanimo is their musical and artistic program, which aims to bridge the gap between the Gospel and Papuan culture. Through classical music and a polyphonic choir, the missionaries have introduced a new perspective on music, helping to reduce domestic violence in tribal communities.
As the Queen of Paradise Orchestra, composed of children, prepares to welcome Pope Francis with traditional African rhythms and classical pieces, the excitement continues to grow. A special concert in honor of the Holy Father is scheduled for September 6, showcasing the unique talents and dedication of the local community.
With the fervor building and the community united in prayer and preparation, Vanimo, Papua New Guinea, eagerly anticipates the Pope’s arrival and the blessings it will bring to their young Church.
