My encounter with Rachel took place shortly after 7 October. Through a mutual Israeli friend, we arranged to meet at her home, where I met her husband Jon and Hersh’s younger sisters. The intimate setting allowed me to delve deeper into their emotions and truly understand their situation.
A Glimpse into their Lives
Rachel shared poignant insights about Hersh – from his adventurous spirit to his love for music and travel. She painted a vivid picture of a young man full of life, dreams, and compassion towards all. Despite the heartbreak, Rachel’s demeanor remained filled with love and hope, devoid of bitterness or resentment.

Before parting ways, Rachel asked me to convey a message to Pope Francis. We recorded a brief video expressing heartfelt gratitude for his support and prayers. This message eventually led to a meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, where Rachel’s profound encounter touched both their hearts.

Our interactions continued over the months, with Rachel expressing her faith through prayer and maintaining hope for her son’s safe return. The devastating news of Hersh’s fate brought about an overwhelming sense of grief, underscoring the brutality of the situation.
