The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem’s Initiatives to Support Palestinian Christian Families Affected by Conflict
Amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has been actively working to provide assistance to Palestinian Christian families impacted by the war in the Holy Land. Since October 7, with the generous support of the universal Church, the Patriarchate has launched various initiatives to aid those in need.
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the head of the Patriarchate, has made a heartfelt plea to donors to continue contributing to their efforts in supporting the local Christian community facing unprecedented challenges due to the prolonged conflict.
Addressing New Hardships for Christian Families
Since the outbreak of the war in October 2023, many Palestinian Christian families have been struggling with financial hardships as they have lost their sources of income. The Patriarchate has stepped in to provide these families with much-needed assistance during these difficult times.
In a video published on the Patriarchate’s website, Cardinal Pizzaballa acknowledges the severe impact of the conflict on the population in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem, emphasizing the urgent need for support.
International Donations Making a Difference
The Patriarchate extends its gratitude to individual and institutional benefactors worldwide who responded generously to their appeal for support in November 2023. These donations have enabled the distribution of food vouchers and the creation of job opportunities for those affected by the war.
Providing Essential Aid and Support
The video highlights the tangible impact of the donations, including the provision of stable employment for 279 individuals, food vouchers for 12 thousand families, support for rent payments, medical care, and children’s schooling. In Gaza, the Patriarchate has been assisting over 1,000 Christian faithful who have sought refuge in the Latin parish of the Holy Family in Gaza City.
Additionally, 123 migrants and asylum seekers displaced by the conflict have been provided with shelter and regular food supplies. The video features testimonies from direct beneficiaries, illustrating the vital role of ongoing support in their lives.
Supporting Christians in the Holy Land
The video concludes with an appeal for continued support to help Christian families remain in the Holy Land amidst the ongoing challenges. Cardinal Pizzaballa emphasizes the importance of solidarity in facilitating peace and justice in the region and preventing further emigration due to the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank.
