By George Malumo – Mongu
The atmosphere was filled with joy and gratitude as hundreds of parishioners, along with representatives from other Oblate parishes in Zambia and Namibia’s Missionary Associates (MAMIs), gathered to commemorate this significant milestone. The highlight of the celebration was the presence of the Oblate Bishop of Mongu Diocese, Evans Chinyama Chinyemba, and Fr. Pat Gitzen, one of the four pioneer Oblates who arrived in Zambia in 1984.
Mr. Isaak Ngoma, the Chairperson of Mary Immaculate parish, shared the inspiring story of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Zambia, setting the tone for the day’s festivities.

As the gathering immersed in the celebration, symbols from various Oblate parishes adorned the venue, each symbolizing a unique contribution to the missionary work carried out over the years.
Reflecting on the Journey
Bishop Chinyemba, delivering a powerful homily, reflected on the humble beginnings of the Oblate mission in Zambia, tracing back to a dream that began in San Antonio, Texas, USA. He commended the pioneering Oblates who arrived at Sancta Maria parish in Lukulu, Western Province in 1984, laying the foundation for what has now grown into a thriving mission across six dioceses in Zambia.
He encouraged the Oblates and their lay associates to continue to evangelize passionately, especially among the marginalized and less fortunate, emphasizing the values of community, prayer, and mission in their work.

Growth and Gratitude
Fr. Chishimba Chibesa, the Zambia Delegation Superior, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all Oblates for their dedicated service in the vineyard of the Lord. He marveled at the remarkable growth of the mission, from just four pioneers to over 60 Oblates living and serving in communities across the country. Fr. Chibesa also extended thanks to the supporters, benefactors, and the Superior General in Rome for their unwavering support.
It was truly a day filled with reflection, celebration, and heartfelt gratitude as the Mary Immaculate parish and the entire Oblate community in Zambia united to honor the legacy of 40 years of dedication and service in spreading the good news.
