The 81st edition of the Venice International Film Festival is set to kick off on the picturesque Lido in Venice, Italy from 28 August to 7 September. This year’s festival promises a return of Hollywood glamour, with A-listers such as George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig, and Lady Gaga gracing the red carpet.
Directed by Alberto Barbera, the 10-day event will feature a jury headed by French actress Isabelle Huppert, who will judge 21 films competing for the prestigious Golden Lion prize. Some of the most anticipated films include Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux” with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, and Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl” featuring Nicole Kidman and Antonio Banderas.
Among the five Italian films in competition are Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” adapted from William Burroughs and starring Daniel Craig, and Giulia Louise Steigerwalt’s “Diva Futura” about Italian pornographer Riccardo Schicchi.
Notable out-of-competition films include Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 cult classic, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and “Wolfs” starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. The festival will open with a screening of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and feature Vittorio De Sica’s “L’oro di Napoli” as the pre-opening film to honor the late film director’s legacy.
