The Maasai Community of Ngorongoro: Defending Rights and Dignity
In a recent call to action, the President of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), Bishop Wolfgang Pisa, OF Cap, emphasized the importance of recognizing the Maasai community of Ngorongoro in the Manyara region as bonafide citizens with dignity and fundamental human rights. This includes the right to vote in the upcoming Local Government Elections of November 2024 and the General Elections scheduled for next year.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a World Heritage Site managed by the Tanzanian Government, has been home to the Maasai people for centuries. However, a recent “voluntary relocation” program initiated by the government has sparked controversy. Many critics have denounced the relocation as anything but voluntary, leading to protests and calls for justice.
Standing in Solidarity
The Maasai community has faced years of grievances, including violations of their land rights, restricted access to social services, and denial of voter registration. In response, they have taken a stand, demanding their rights be recognized and upheld by the authorities.
Bishop Pisa, alongside the TEC, has called on the Tanzanian Government to respect the principles of good governance, transparency, and justice. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and partnership with the Maasai community to address their concerns and ensure their rights are protected.
Protecting Rights and Dignity
Bishop Pisa also cautioned against the use of force and violence against the Maasai people, emphasizing that all citizens deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. He urged the government to listen to the voices of the Maasai and work towards a peaceful resolution that respects their way of life.
As the Maasai community continues to fight for their rights and dignity, the support of the public and the commitment of the government to dialogue are essential. Together, we can uphold the values of justice and equality for all.
Join us in standing with the Maasai community of Ngorongoro as they defend their rights and dignity in the face of adversity.
