
The Catholic Church in the Philippines has taken a significant step towards beatifying Laureana “Ka Luring” Franco, a beloved lay catechist known for her dedication to the poor and her unwavering faith.

The formal initiation of the beatification process for Laureana “Ka Luring” Franco was officiated by Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara of Pasig at a ceremony held at the St. Anne Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan Shrine.
Bishop Vergara announced the formation of a Historical Commission assigned to study Franco’s extensive writings and contributions to the Church.
The cause’s postulator, Erickson Javier, presented the “supplex libellus” to Bishop Vergara, outlining Franco’s life story and highlighting her virtuous acts as a lay catechist.
In response, Bishop Vergara reiterated his support for the beatification and canonization endeavors, underscoring Franco’s reputation as a true servant of God.
Franco, affectionately known as “Ka Luring,” passed away in 2011 at the age of 75, leaving behind a lasting impact on her community and the Church.
Originally from a humble family in Hagonoy, Taguig City, Franco was the eldest of eight siblings. Her family’s deep-rooted faith and devotion to prayer influenced her decision to join the Legion of Mary and strengthen her connection to the Madonna.
Throughout her spiritual journey, Franco received notable recognitions such as the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Award from Pope John Paul II in 2002 and the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1990.
Transitioning from a switchboard operator for the Philippine Air Force to a full-time catechist in the 1960s, Franco continued to exemplify her unwavering faith and dedication to serving her community.
She was one of the pioneering lay ministers in the Archdiocese of Manila authorized to distribute Communion.
Her legacy is defined by her tireless service to the marginalized and her simple yet profound spiritual life.
