
The Catholic Church Seminar in New Delhi Highlights Challenges Faced by Migrant Workers
In a recent seminar organized by the Catholic Church in New Delhi, concerns were raised about the growing social unrest and inequality stemming from increased unemployment and poverty in India.
Hosted by the northern region of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India Commission for Migrants at the Diocesan Community Centre, the event brought together 65 participants, including workers and activists from migrant, internally displaced, and unorganized labor groups.
Amarjeet Kaur, the National General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, highlighted the widening gap between the rich and the poor, expressing the urgency for a comprehensive policy framework to support vulnerable groups, especially the youth.
Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, in his opening address, emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective action in finding sustainable solutions for migrant workers facing challenges in northern India.
Father Jaison Vadassery introduced the CCBI Mission 2033, a pastoral plan aimed at supporting migrants and unorganized workers, aligning with the Church’s mission to promote justice and human rights.
The seminar concluded with the development of an action plan focusing on advocacy for stronger national policies to protect the rights of migrant workers, building connections among dioceses and organizations, and educating workers about their rights and available resources.
Overall, the seminar served as an essential platform for dialogue and collaboration to address the pressing issues faced by migrant workers, underscoring the Church’s commitment to upholding human dignity and labor rights.
