As the event unfolds, the words of Pope Francis ring loud and clear, setting the tone for the week-long gathering. His message, delivered specifically for the participants of the Meeting, invites us to become “beggars of the essential” by turning to Jesus Christ.
The theme of this year’s meeting, “If We Are Not After the Essential, What are we After?”, draws inspiration from the renowned American author Cormac McCarthy. In his message, Pope Francis challenges us not to lose hope in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, but to work towards fostering a world built on the foundations of fraternity and peace.
Exploring Essential Questions
The opening conference titled “A Presence for Peace” sets the stage for a week filled with thought-provoking discussions and engaging debates. Leading figures such as the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, share their insights on topics ranging from destiny and pain to hope and cultural values.
Noteworthy presentations include discussions on social inequalities in the Holy Land, economic disparities post-Covid pandemic, and the impact of psychiatric illnesses on society. A diverse lineup of speakers promises to provide unique perspectives on these pressing issues.
An Engaging Lineup
With a robust schedule of 140 conferences featuring over 450 speakers from around the globe, this year’s Meeting is a melting pot of ideas and experiences. Livestreamed in 7 languages and spanning 200 hours, the event is a truly international affair.
In addition to the stimulating discussions, the Meeting also showcases 16 captivating exhibitions, highlighting historical events like the 1914 Christmas truce and the construction of basilicas in the Holy Land. These exhibitions offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of human history and cultural heritage.
Fostering Hope in Challenging Times
In a world fraught with uncertainties and conflicts, the President of the Rimini Meeting Foundation, Bernhard Scholz, emphasizes the importance of staying resilient and hopeful. He urges participants to discover the inherent goodness in humanity and to resist the temptation of indifference and resignation.
According to Mr. Scholz, this year’s theme serves as a reminder to look beyond the superficial and embrace the profound significance of humanity’s potential. By coming together to explore essential questions, the Meeting aims to inspire participants to navigate the complexities of modern life with courage and determination.
