As the world marks World Humanitarian Day on August 19, Pope Francis calls on everyone to remember and pray for humanitarian workers, especially those who have sacrificed their lives in the service of others during times of war and disasters.
Despite the challenges they face, volunteers continue to provide crucial aid around the globe, often putting their lives on the line. The United Nations has designated this day to honor their courage and remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
In a heartfelt message shared recently, Pope Francis highlighted the crucial role of humanitarians in promoting a sense of solidarity and brotherhood among all individuals.
2024: A Deadly Year for Humanitarians
Tragically, the number of humanitarian workers losing their lives in armed conflicts is on the rise. This year, 192 humanitarian workers have been killed, with 119 being local staff members – making 2024 one of the deadliest years for those in the field.
Challenges in Gaza
Caritas Internationalis reports a significant increase in humanitarian worker deaths in Gaza, with at least 274 individuals losing their lives in the past 10 months alone. The number of casualties in Gaza surpasses the total global death toll of humanitarian workers between 2021 and 2022.
Caritas mourns the loss of two of its staff members, Viola and Issam Abedrabbo, who tragically lost their lives while serving those in need. The organization condemns the attacks on humanitarians in war zones and calls for greater protection for those risking their lives to assist others.
Advocacy for International Humanitarian Law
Caritas urges the United States and European Union to uphold International Humanitarian Law by divesting from military support to parties involved in violations. Efforts must be made to prioritize the safety and well-being of humanitarian workers worldwide.
Protecting the Protectors
National humanitarian workers are increasingly at risk, facing mounting challenges in their efforts to provide critical aid to communities in need. Caritas calls for greater resources and accountability to ensure the safety of all those dedicated to humanitarian work.
As we observe World Humanitarian Day, let us heed the call to action and stand in solidarity with those who selflessly devote themselves to helping others. Together, we can make a difference and create a more compassionate world for all.
Let us remember the sacrifices of humanitarian workers and strive to support their noble cause with unwavering dedication and unity.
