Fostering a Synodal Missionary Church in Asia: FABC Meeting in Bangkok
The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) recently gathered in Bangkok for a three-day meeting, focusing on preparing for the upcoming second session of the General Assembly of the Synod set for October 2024.
Cardinal Stephen Chow, SJ, Bishop of Hong Kong, emphasized the importance of Asian cultures in maintaining harmonious relationships and unity within the Church’s synodal journey. He highlighted the unique perspective that Asian churches bring to the universal Church.
During the meeting, bishops listened to personal accounts from young frontline priests from Japan, the Philippines, India, and Myanmar, sharing their experiences and insights. These stories underscored the essential role of frontline workers in shaping the Church’s path towards synodality.
The discussions during the meeting centered around the working document for the Synod, exploring how the Church in Asia can embody a synodal missionary presence. The bishops delved into foundational aspects of synodal life, strengthening ecclesial unity, and enhancing evangelization practices.
Vanessa Cheng Siu-wai, representing Hong Kong at the Synod, expressed her appreciation for the discernment process and the unity forged among delegates from diverse backgrounds. The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of fellowship and communion, setting a hopeful tone for the upcoming Synod session.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, India, highlighted the valuable bonds formed during the meeting as a significant contribution to the broader discussions at the Synod of Bishops. The meeting, inaugurated by Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon, drew 38 delegates from 17 different Asian countries.
