The former American president, Donald Trump, said yesterday that he advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when they met last month to “achieve victory quickly” because “the killings must stop” in the Gaza Strip.
In a press conference held yesterday by Trump in New Jersey, the Republican candidate for the White House was asked if he encouraged Netanyahu not to accept a ceasefire deal with Hamas. The tycoon denied doing so, stating that Netanyahu “knows what he’s doing. I encouraged him – Trump explained – to finish it quickly, ‘get your victory and end it’. It has to end, the killings must end.”
Later, at an event on combating antisemitism, Trump criticized the calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip made by his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
“From the start,” the US Vice President worked to tie Israel’s hands behind its back, always calling for an immediate ceasefire, which would only give Hamas time to regroup and launch a new attack in the style of October 7th, according to the tycoon. “I will give Israel the support it needs to win, but I want them to win quickly,” reiterated the former American president.
The Times of Israel highlights how the phrase “the killings must end” is the closest thing to a clear criticism from Trump of the continuation of the Israeli state’s war in the Palestinian enclave. Less than a month ago in an interview on Fox News, the tycoon had already urged Netanyahu to “end” the offensive in the Gaza Strip, warning that “Israel’s image in the world is fading: it must end quickly, it must not last any longer, it’s too long,” Trump had said.
