Discover the Beauty of Estonian Catholic Pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Chapel
On August 24, Estonian Catholics will embark on a meaningful journey to the country’s oldest sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The annual pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Chapel in Viru-Nigula holds a special significance this year as the Apostolic Administration of Estonia prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
As we commemorate 25 years of God’s blessings through this pilgrimage, we reflect on the rich history and spiritual significance of this sacred place. The pilgrimage is dedicated to honoring the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Apostolic Administration of Estonia on November 1, 1924.
This tradition dates back to May 1, 2000, when the first pilgrimage to St. Mary’s Chapel in Viru-Nigula took place. This event coincided with Pope John Paul II’s declaration of the Holy Year, bringing an abundance of graces to the Church in Estonia through the intercession of the Holy Virgin Mary of Viru-Nigula.
Bishop Philippe Jourdan, the Apostolic Administrator of Estonia, emphasizes the spiritual essence of pilgrimage. He explains that it is a journey of prayer, where pilgrims connect with the Virgin Mary and seek blessings for themselves, the Church, and the world.
Throughout the last century, the Catholic Church in Estonia has experienced remarkable growth and blessings. The restoration of recognition by Pope Pius XI in 1924 marked a new era of mission and faith for Estonian Catholics, who previously belonged to the Diocese of Riga.
As we express gratitude for the past 100 years, Bishop Jourdan invites prayers for the Church’s continued grace and blessings. He also requests prayers for the beatification of Archbishop Eduard Profittlich SJ, the first Apostolic Administrator of Estonia.
Participating in the Marian pilgrimage offers a unique opportunity for spiritual enrichment and community bonding. It is a journey of self-discovery, faith deepening, and connection with God and fellow believers. Let us join in prayer for peace in Ukraine, the world, and in our hearts as we commemorate this significant milestone.
