The Archdiocese of Huambo Faces Pastoral Challenges
Located approximately 450 km from the capital city of Luanda, the province of Huambo in Angola is facing several pastoral challenges, according to Archbishop Zeferino Zeca Martins, S.V.D. who has been leading the Archdiocese for the past six years.
One of the most pressing concerns for Archbishop Zeca is the financial burden of sustaining the seminaries in the Archdiocese amidst a challenging economic climate. Despite the generosity of the people, the depressed economy has placed a significant strain on the resources available for the seminaries.
The Need for More Priests
Even with nearly 150 diocesan priests, Archbishop Zeca emphasizes the continuing need for more priests in the region. He likens priests to pearls, stating that the more you have, the more you need. In the past six years, Archbishop Zeca has ordained over 45 diocesan priests, averaging 8 to 10 priests annually.
While the Holy See provides assistance to the seminaries, the Archbishop believes that more support is required to adequately meet the needs of the seminarians. He is calling on well-wishers and benefactors to help bridge the financial gap.
Challenges of Cultural Beliefs
Archbishop Zeca also addresses the prevalent belief in witchcraft in Angolan society, which poses challenges for evangelization efforts in the Archdiocese. He emphasizes the need for a shift in mentality to combat this cultural belief and promote evangelization effectively.
Neglect in Huambo Province
Describing the dire socio-economic conditions in the interior of Huambo Province, Archbishop Zeca highlights the neglect and abandonment by the Angolan Government. The lack of infrastructure, inadequate education and healthcare services, and limited social services have created significant challenges for the population.
The Archbishop calls for equitable distribution of resources to all parts of the country to address the pressing needs of the people in Huambo Province.
Despite the difficulties faced by the Archdiocese, Archbishop Zeca remains committed to leading his community and overcoming the challenges through faith, perseverance, and the support of well-meaning individuals.
