Celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Every 15th of August, the Church commemorates the beautiful Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. It is a day of joy and reflection, as Pope Francis reminds us that Mary’s ascent to heaven signifies her selfless service to others and her unwavering praise to God.

As we celebrate Mary’s ascension, we honor a mother who embraced God’s will with courage and grace, despite the challenges she faced as the mother of Jesus. She remains an inspiration and a guide in our journey of faith.
Embracing Mary’s Example in African Daily Life
While Mary’s Assumption may not be a public holiday in many African countries, we are encouraged to make time to attend Mass and participate in the Eucharistic celebration. Some parishes offer multiple Masses on this day to accommodate the faithful.
Nurturing Faith in Children and Youth
The Archbishop of Lagos has emphasized the importance of catechism lessons for children and youth, stressing the need for a strong foundation in Catholic doctrine and prayers. It is essential for parents and the Church community to guide and educate the younger generation in the faith, including devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
A Day of Celebration for Special Milestones
On the Feast of the Assumption, many priests and religious mark significant events such as ordination or religious profession. We join in their celebration and ask for Mary’s protection over their vocations.
Let us continue to seek Mary’s intercession for our homes, communities, and the world at large, as we strive for peace and spiritual growth in our Christian journey.
