Welcome to the 109th World Esperanto Congress in Tanzania! The picturesque city of Arusha played host to 850 participants from 66 countries, all gathered to celebrate the beauty of the Esperanto language and its impact on global unity and environmental awareness.
The theme of this year’s congress was “Language, man, and environment for a better world,” a fitting focus as attendees delved into scientific and cultural programs. The International Union of Catholic Esperantists (IKUE) took center stage, highlighting the importance of environmental concerns and ecumenical services.
One of the highlights of the event was the unveiling of two important translations in Esperanto – the encyclical “Laudato Si” and the apostolic plea “Laudate Deum.” These translations sparked meaningful conversations around environmental preservation and the responsibility we all share in caring for our planet.
President of the IKUE, Marija Belošević, delivered a powerful speech on the themes of “Laudato Si,” contributing to the overall message of the congress. The week also featured an ecumenical service and Mass, bringing together Esperanto-speaking individuals from diverse backgrounds to worship and celebrate unity in faith.
The IKUE has a rich history, dating back to the early 20th century when Catholics first became enamored with the international language of Esperanto. Today, the IKUE continues to spread the teachings of the Church through publications like the magazine “Espero Katolika” and Vatican Radio transmissions in Esperanto.
In recent years, the IKUE has expanded its reach into the virtual realm, hosting online congresses, conferences, and even daily recitations of the rosary with participants from around the world. Charitable initiatives have also been a focus, with projects in Cameroon aimed at providing sustainable energy solutions and educational opportunities for local communities.
