Reflecting on the message Pope Francis delivered during his Apostolic Journey to South Korea in 2014, Fr. Diego emphasized the importance of internal reconciliation and universal fraternity. In an interview with Vatican News, he shared his vision of fostering interreligious dialogue and supporting marginalized communities, particularly migrants from the Philippines and Nigeria.
The Impact of Pope Francis’ Compassion
Recalling the tragic sinking of a ferry carrying young students in 2014, Fr. Diego praised Pope Francis’ compassionate response to the grieving families. The Pope’s visit brought solace and hope to a nation still recovering from the trauma of the event. Fr. Diego witnessed how the Pope’s actions inspired many Koreans, leading some to convert to Catholicism. “It was a providential visit,” he remarked.
Challenges on the Path to Reconciliation
Despite moments of consolation, Fr. Diego acknowledged the ongoing challenges towards reconciliation between North and South Korea. He expressed disappointment in the current state of diplomatic relations, citing a lack of progress in peace efforts. The mission for unity remains fraught with obstacles, both domestically and internationally.
Addressing the Needs of Migrant Communities
Fr. Diego highlighted the struggles of marginalized groups, including migrants from diverse regions seeking better opportunities in South Korea. Referring to them as “the new poor,” he emphasized the need for solidarity and support for these vulnerable populations. The Church’s outreach extends to Filipinos, Nigerians, and other migrants facing economic hardships in a rapidly evolving society.
Promoting Dialogue and Understanding
Looking ahead to Pope Francis’ forthcoming Apostolic Journey to Southeast Asia, Fr. Diego anticipates the Pontiff’s role in fostering dialogue and mutual respect among diverse faith communities. He emphasized the importance of building peaceful relationships with people of all backgrounds, especially in a multicultural society like South Korea.
A Call for Youth Empowerment
As challenges persist in engaging young people in religious activities, Fr. Diego expressed hope for the upcoming World Youth Day in 2027. He stressed the need for innovative initiatives to combat youth demoralization and reignite the joy of faith among the younger generations. The Christian community’s commitment to nurturing and empowering youth remains crucial in an ever-changing world.
Fr. Diego’s reflections offer a profound insight into the ongoing journey towards unity, compassion, and intercultural dialogue, echoing Pope Francis’ message of hope and solidarity.
