Paola Egonu: A Tribute Against Racism
On the night of August 12, a new work by street artist Laika appeared in front of the Coni headquarters at viale Tiziano 70 in Rome. The artwork, titled “Italianità,” depicts Paola Egonu, the volleyball player from the Italian national team and newly crowned Olympic champion, spiking a ball with the words “Stop racism, hate, xenophobia, ignorance” written on it.
“This victory is a slap in the face to all so-called ‘patriots’ who do not accept a multiethnic Italy, made up of second-generation individuals who do not want ius soli. It’s a direct hit at those who refer to physical traits when talking about ‘Italianità’,” stated the artist, taking a stand against General Vannacci.
“There is no room in our country for xenophobia, racism, hatred, and intolerance anymore. Racism is a social scourge that must be defeated. Doing so through sports is crucial. I believe in a future of inclusivity, hospitality, and respect for human rights. Being represented by athletes like Paola Egonu, Myriam Sylla, and Ekaterina Antropova is an honor. Seeing them with the most precious Olympic medal around their necks, singing the Italian anthem with tears in their eyes, brings immense joy. I dedicate this poster to all Italians who are not recognized as such by our state,” Laika concluded.
