“We’ve confirmed our bronze medal after Tokyo, and it’s never guaranteed. We stayed focused until the end, and it’s a very important result for us after perhaps three too difficult years, thanks also to our coaches and all the girls who work with us,” said rhythmic gymnastics team captain Alessia Maurelli on Rai Sport after winning the bronze at the Paris Olympics. “We never backed down; our response was to keep working, and this medal is the answer,” said the Italian referring to the storm surrounding the allegations made by former gymnasts against the coaches.
“The coaches never skipped a day at the gym – Maurelli explained. Only those who have that something extra can win an Olympic medal.” On the live marriage proposal from her boyfriend Massimo after the competition, Maurelli commented: “I still haven’t realized what happened. Last year, I jokingly told him that I would propose, never did I think he would do it.”
“Let’s say the thought of what happened never crossed our minds. It shaped the way we approached the arena. In this bronze medal, there was no desire for revenge, just passion and hard work despite everything. In these years, we remained silent, and the best response was this. The dedication goes to our coach, our Emanuela Maccarani,” said Alessia Maurelli, captain of the rhythmic gymnastics team after the Olympic bronze in Paris, referring to the case of alleged abuses for which coach Emanuela Maccarani was accused, then acquitted.
When asked about the marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Maurelli responds, “The medal comes first because it is history; confirming it is never taken for granted. Then, surely the ring represents the closing of a circle, and a medal and marriage feel like eternity.”
