Italy’s water polo team continues to protest after two appeals were rejected by World Aquatics regarding the referee decisions in the game lost to Hungary in the quarter-finals. The Italian team listened to the national anthem with their backs turned to the jury table before the match against Spain, which was played for 5th to 8th place in the rankings. Shortly after the game started, coach Campagna called a timeout to allow Francesco Condemi to receive applause from his teammates and the audience.
Italy also intentionally played the first four minutes of the match with one player short as a protest against the 4-minute expulsion given to Condemi for ‘brutality’ against Hungary. During this time, Settebello practically did not play, conceding three goals until they returned to full strength.
The game then saw Settebello defeated by Spain with a score of 11-9. Italy will play the final for 7th and 8th place tomorrow at 7:35 PM against the loser between Greece and Australia, who will play at 6 PM.
TAS rejects FIN’s appeal
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected FIN’s appeal regarding the refereeing error in the match between Settebello and Hungary, which resulted in Italy’s elimination in the Olympic tournament in Paris. After having two appeals dismissed by World Aquatics, FIN decided to turn to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.
