During a meeting with members of the Afghan Community Association in Italy, Pope Francis condemned the use of God’s name to foster contempt, hatred, and violence towards others. The association comprises Afghan men and women residing in Italy who work towards the integration of Afghan refugees and advocate for dialogue and respect for human rights.
The Troubled Situation in Afghanistan
Pope Francis acknowledged the tumultuous history of Afghanistan, plagued with instability, warfare, and human rights violations that have resulted in mass exodus from the country. He highlighted the discrimination faced by the diverse ethnic groups in Afghanistan and the challenges encountered by Afghan refugees on the borders with Pakistan, particularly the Pashtun minority.
In this context, the Pope emphasized the role of religion in bridging differences and promoting citizenship rights for all, without discrimination or violence. He urged the Afghan Community Association to continue their efforts to foster religious harmony and interfaith dialogue to establish paths towards peace.
Promoting Human Fraternity
Referring to the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together signed in Abu Dhabi, Pope Francis reaffirmed that religions should never be used to incite war, hostility, or extremism. He emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation, dialogue, and understanding in fostering peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
The Pope shared his hope that these principles would influence societal behavior, particularly in Pakistan, benefiting the Pashtun community. He cited examples of interreligious solidarity in African countries as models of true fraternity and harmony.
Building an Inclusive Society
In conclusion, Pope Francis called for the establishment of a society where all individuals are granted full citizenship rights and can live according to their customs and culture without discrimination. He invoked God’s assistance in guiding government leaders and peoples towards creating a just and inclusive society.
Together, let us strive to promote harmony, understanding, and respect among all peoples, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds. Let us work towards a world where love and tolerance prevail over hatred and violence.
