Shocking news has emerged from Nicaragua as yet another priest has been arrested by authorities. Father Jarvin Tórrez, the rector of the San Luis Gonzaga Major Seminary of Philosophy and parish priest of Santa María de Guadalupe church in Matagalpa, was taken into custody on 5 August. The disturbing reports have left parishioners and human rights activists in disbelief over the continued oppression of religious figures in the country.
This recent arrest adds to the growing list of priests who have been imprisoned in Nicaragua, with a total of thirteen in just one week. Many of these individuals are from the Diocese of Matagalpa, where Bishop Rolando Álvarez was forced into exile earlier this year. The wave of detentions has sparked outrage among those fighting for justice and freedom in Nicaragua.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the Republic of Nicaragua has maintained diplomatic ties with the Holy See, although tensions remain high. The ongoing crackdown on religious leaders in the country has raised concerns both domestically and internationally, with calls for action to address the human rights violations being reported.
